Brea and John embark on a romantic weekend getaway to an isolated estate in the mountains. They are pleasantly surprised when two of their friends, Darren and Malia, also show up unexpectedly. Their plans for fun soon give way to terror when members of a violent biker gang invade the peaceful countryside. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.

John David Washington–son of celebrated actor Denzel Washington–pulls double duty by acting in two movies this year (BlacKkKlansman and Monsters and Men). Monsters tackles the always relevant subject of police brutality. Tensions rise when a young man records a police officer shooting a black motorist in a Brooklyn neighborhood.
#5 on our top 10 African-American movies 2018 list is from first-time director Idris Elba. Still reeling from his brother’s death in a shooting when he was a child, Dennis Campbell, aka “D”, is hired by Jamaican crimelord and reggae producer King Fox to deliver a package of cocaine to British gangbanger Rico who resides in the Hackney district of London. But when Dennis finds out that the man who killed his brother years ago is also living in England, he is torn between revenge against the murderer and the duty he was sworn to do.
BlacKkKlansman shines the spotlight on racism and how dangerous polarizing rhetoric can be. Director Spike Lee and co-screenwriters Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott take Ron Stallworth’s memoir and adopt it for the screen. Stallworth was a Black Colorado Springs police officer who successfully infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, going so far as to speak with David Duke on several occasions. Stallworth’s undercover police work, aided by an immeasurable assist from his White partner, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) helped expose and quash an attack on Black activists.
3Black Panther (2018)
T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king after his father’s death. But to have a successful movie we must have an antagonist to challange his plan. T’Challa is pushed to his absolute limit by Erik Killmonger who doesn’t think T’Challa occupying the thrown of Wakanda as a forgone conclusion. Full of great action scenes and striking set designs, Black Panther does not disappoint and earns its spot on our top 10 African-American movies 2018 list.

Collin must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning in his Oakland, Calif., neighborhood. His bond with his volatile best friend soon gets tested when Collin sees a police officer shoot a suspect in the back during a chase through the streets. Things soon come to a head when the buddies attend a party at the upscale home of a young and wealthy tech entrepreneur.
